  • Gernot Rohr says he had the intention of leading the Super Eagles to the quarterfinal of the 2022 World Cup before he was sacked
  • Despite leading the Super Eagles to the World Cup play-offs, the Nigeria Football Federation fired the Franco-German tactician
  • Rohr said it was a big disappointment that Nigeria failed to defeat the Black Stars of Ghana, saying the Eagles had better players

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has spoken for the first time after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The Franco-German was fired by the Nigeria Football Federation shortly after qualifying the team for the World Cup play-off and Augustine Eguavoen was appointed to qualify the team for the tournament in Qatar.

Having played a 0-0 draw with the Black Stars in Kumasi, Ghana held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Abuja to proceed to the World Cup proper.

Speaking with Brila.net, Rohr said:

“Oh yes, there was a big disappointment after this match. We had all the hope that Nigeria would qualify and believe that the better players are in Nigeria, not in Ghana.
“But sometimes the collective work of a team can be stronger than the individual strength of the other team.
“My target was to go to the World Cup in Qatar and to go at least to the quarter-final and to have a good image of Nigerian football like we had in the last five years.”

Rohr was sacked as Super Eagles head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, just a few weeks before the commencement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.

NFF dissolves Super Eagles technical crew

Meanwhile, the NFF has relieved all members of the Super Eagles technical crew including Emmanuel Amuneke after the team failed to secure World Cup qualification.

Technical Adviser of the team Augustine Eguavoen earlier tendered his resignation to the football house, and now the NFF has told other members of the technical crew to leave with immediate effect.

NFF has withdrawn the two-and-half-year contract offered to the coaches and terminated the appointment of the entire technical crew of the team with immediate effect.

Osimhen laments World Cup miss

Sports Brief earlier reported that Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has lamented Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen who was in the thick of the action during the encounter on Tuesday night was left disappointed over his side’s failure to pick the ticket.

The disappointing result also led to fans invading the stadium and vandalising some sections of the field as well as destroying the glass in the technical area.
