Awoniyi was preferred in attack when the Super Eagles defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 in the opening group game of the tournament starting alongside Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Nante’s Moses Simon.

The power forward could however not get on the scoresheet but was a menace for the Egyptian defence all through his stay on the pitch as the Pharaohs struggled with his physicality.

According to Complete Sports the Union Berlin forward is still expected to lead Nigeria’s attack again ahead of Sadiq Umar and Peter Olayinka for the game against Sudan on Saturday, January 15 with the former Liverpool striker promising to deliver better this time around.

“It’s just one game and things will get better. The most important thing is that we won and there will always be room for improvement,” he said after the team’s training on Wednesday.
“Now, the Egypt game is behind us and what we are thinking about now is how to beat Sudan. They are good side too and we must be at their our best against them.
“Personally, I will strive to do better than I did against Egypt.”

Nigeria currently tops Group D with 3 points after Sudan and Guinea-Bissau played out a goalless draw in their first game.

A win for the Super Eagles will seal qualification to the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations.
