Embattled Premier League side, Southampton have announced the signing of Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu in their bid to escape relegation from the English top flight this season.

The Saints have revealed that the Nigerian signed a three-and-a-half year contract with them, after making a switch from Belgian side, KRC Genk.

German giants, Eintracht Frankfurt were leading the race for Onuachu's signature, before Southampton secured his services on the deadline day of the January transfer window.

Why did Southampton sign Onuachu?

So far this season in the Belgian League, Onuachu has registered 17 goals in 22 games. The Saints chiefs will hope the striker can use that form to escape relegation in the Premier League.

After 20 games played so far this season in the English top flight, Southampton are at the bottom of the table with 15 points, having won only four games.

Aide says he advised Onuachu

Sports Brief spoke to Kola Daniel, who is the executive media aide to Nigeria's Sports Minister, Sunday Dare. Daniel he claimed he was one of those who advised Onuachu to move to England.

''Paul is my close friend and we chatted before he made the move, which I am happy for, because he will have the chance to prove himself in the Premier League.''

Paul Onuachu scores four goals

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Super Eagles striker, Onuachu scoring all four goals for Genk as they defeated Sporting Charleroi 4-1 in a Belgian Pro League encounter.

The Nigerian international opened his account from the penalty spot and then completed his brace before half-time.

The 28-year-old then found the back of the net again in the 71st minute, before scoring a fourth goal in stoppage time.

Onuachu has now made history as the first KRC Genk player to score four goals in a single game since back in 2003.
