  • Mohammed Salisu is enjoying a good season at Southampton but he is yet to honour an invitation for the national team

Former Sunderland forward Asamoah Gyan has lauded Southampton center-back Mohammed Salisu for his outstanding performances in the English Premier League.

The 36-year-old has grown fond of the defender, revealing he is a big fan of the 22-year-old Saints center-back.

"I don't really no him, I watch him as a fan and he is doing very well at Southampton. I think he is one of the top three defenders in the English Premier League and because he is doing well it's making Ghanaians proud. I don't know if he wants to play for the national team or not," he said.

Mohammed Salisu is having a breakthrough campaign in the English topflight, and currently leads the table with the most interceptions.

However, attempts to persuade him to play for the national team of Ghana has proven futile, with Ghanaians beginning to turn their back on the budding defender.

Mohammed Salisu joined the Saints in the summer of 2020 from Spanish club Real Valladolid and after a slow start in his first season, he seems to have settled in well, making the team of the week three times.

Mohammed Salisu features as Southampton suffer heavy defeat against Chelsea

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana's Mohammed Salisu was in action for Southampton as Chelsea swat aside the Saints in ruthless fashion on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old guardsman, who has had an awesome season with Southampton in the English top-flight was a pale shadow of his former self as Chelsea unleashed their anger on Salisu and his team-mates.

Prior to the game against Chelsea, Salisu was ranked No.1 in the Premier League interception charts but was left gobsmacked with the ruthless nature of the Chelsea attack.
