  • Uncle of Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu has opened up on the reason behind his nephew's refusal to play for Ghana
  • The Southampton center-back has rejected several call ups from the national team to play for the Black Stars of Ghana
  • Salisu's uncle disclosed the defender was asked to pay money when he had the chance to play for Ghana's U17 team

Ahmed Yakubu, the uncle of Southampton defender, Mohammed Salisu, has revealed that his nephew's refusal to play for Ghana is because of how he was treated when he had the chance to play for the Black Starlets.

Salisu was denied a role in Ghana's U17 team for not paying money that was demanded by some members of the technical team, according to his uncle.

And that has haunted the young defender since, forcing him to reject any invite to the senior national team despite his splendid form for Southampton.

"Certain coaches/ Technical Team/ Scouts were demanding for money from him (Mohammed Salisu) to be in the final squad of the Ghana's Under 17 squad then," Yakubu Ahmed told Sikka FM.

Mohammed Salisu has been a mainstay in Ralph Hasenhuttl's team this season and produced his best performance when the Saints held champions Manchester City before the break.

Salisu has made 23 appearances in all competitions for the St Mary's outfit, and has a goal to his credit, after scoring in an EFL Cup match.

The 22-year-old joined Southampton from Spanish outfit Real Valladolid in the summer of 2020, and has since become one of the best defenders in the English Premier League.

Mohammed Salisu not interested in playing for Ghana

Earlier, SportsBrief.com reported that, highly-rated Ghanaian defender, Mohammed Salisu, does not want to play for the Black Stars, according to football administrator, Alhaji Karim Grusah.

Grusah, a close friend to Salisu's family, tried to convince the 22-year-old to accept an invite to the Black Stars, but he flatly denied.

In an interview with Atinka FM, Grusah revealed the Southampton ace was furious when he contacted him and asked him to 'stay away from the matter'.
