Sir Alex Ferguson, the 84-year-old former Manchester United manager, was transported to hospital on Sunday as a precautionary measure after experiencing a health scare at Old Trafford ahead of the club’s Premier League match against Liverpool.
According to reports, Ferguson was initially assessed by medical personnel in the Stretford End tunnel before being escorted to a waiting ambulance. After evaluation inside the vehicle, he was subsequently taken to hospital for further examination. A source told SunSport that Ferguson was conscious and described as “okay” while in the ambulance before leaving the ground.
The club is yet to confirm the full details of his condition, and the precise nature of his illness remains unknown at this stage.
Ferguson, who retired from management in 2013, has remained a regular presence at Old Trafford, typically watching home fixtures from the directors’ box. He served as a club ambassador for 12 years following his retirement, though that role concluded last year following the arrival of new ownership under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Sunday’s incident is not the first time Ferguson’s health has drawn widespread concern. In May 2018, the Scotsman suffered a brain haemorrhage that required emergency surgery, with doctors at the time giving him only a 20 percent chance of survival. He made a full recovery and returned to Old Trafford in September 2018, a remarkable turnaround that was widely reported at the time.
Ferguson’s place in English football history is unrivalled. During his 26-year tenure at Manchester United, he guided the club to 13 Premier League titles, along with two UEFA Champions League trophies and five FA Cups, among numerous other honours. He remains one of the most decorated managers in the history of the sport.
The Premier League match between Manchester United and Liverpool proceeded as scheduled on Sunday, with reports indicating the game ended in a five-goal thriller, Kobbie Mainoo scoring the decisive goal having recently signed a new contract with the club.
Further updates on Ferguson’s condition are expected as the club and those close to him provide more information.
