Simeone Claims Atletico Madrid Were Superior to Arsenal Despite 1-1 Champions League Semi-Final Draw as Lookman Misses Prove Costly

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid outplayed Arsenal in the second half of their Champions League semi-final first leg, but Ademola Lookman's profligacy in front of goal denied his side a decisive advantage heading into the Emirates return leg.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has expressed frustration at his side’s inability to capitalise on second-half dominance against Arsenal, after the two clubs shared a 1-1 draw in the Champions League semi-final first leg on 29 April 2026.

Simeone was adamant that Atletico controlled large portions of the contest, particularly after the interval, despite the scoreline suggesting parity. “The first half was evenly matched – maybe they had more possession, but they didn’t create many chances. We were better than them in the second half,” the Argentine head coach said after the match.

The Atletico boss acknowledged that Arsenal’s use of substitutes temporarily disrupted his side’s rhythm, but argued that La Rojiblancos responded effectively. “They eased off a bit, and we got our organisation together. We were better at the back and created chances through [Antoine] Griezmann and [Ademola] Lookman,” Simeone added.

Central to Simeone’s post-match frustration was the finishing of Nigeria international Ademola Lookman, who was Atletico’s most threatening attacking presence throughout the evening. The Super Eagles forward squandered two of the team’s three clearest opportunities, directing tame efforts at Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and sending other attempts off target. Lookman’s wastefulness proved significant in a tie that remains finely balanced ahead of the second leg.

Atletico did manage to recover from falling behind, with Viktor Gyokeres giving Arsenal the lead before Julian Alvarez converted a second-half penalty to level the tie at 1-1. The result means neither side holds a clear advantage as the contest moves to the Emirates Stadium for the return fixture.

Lookman has been one of the standout performers in European football in recent seasons, having scored a hat-trick for Atalanta in the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen before completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid. His record at this level makes the missed chances against Arsenal all the more notable, given his capacity to deliver in high-pressure knockout matches.

For Arsenal, the draw represents a solid result on the road against one of Europe’s most defensively disciplined sides, managed by Simeone who has built Atletico’s identity around defensive organisation and counter-attacking efficiency during his tenure, which began in December 2011. The Gunners will host the second leg with the tie level, giving them the advantage of playing at home in the decisive match.

Simeone will be aware that missed opportunities in two-legged European ties can prove decisive. Whether Lookman and his teammates can sharpen their finishing at the Emirates will go a long way in determining which club advances to the Champions League final.
