  • Bounou’s impressive performance in goal for Sevilla saw them finish in the fourth position in the just-ended campaign
  • Aside from winning the Zamora Trophy, the 31-year-old was also voted by fans as the first winner of the newly introduced La Liga Santander Mid-Season African MVP Award

Morocco and Sevilla shot-stopper Yassine Bounou scooped home the Zamora Trophy following the completion of the 2021-22 La Liga season.

Bounou edged La Liga winner and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to the individual accolade on the back of his impressive displays in between the sticks for Sevilla in the just-ended campaign.

His latest feat makes him the second African to have won the top goalkeeping diadem in Spain after legendary Cameroon custodian Jacques Celestin Songo'o, who won the award in the 1996-1997 season with Deportivo de La Coruña.

What is the Zamora Trophy?

The Zamora Trophy is a football award dedicated to goalkeepers, established by the Spanish newspaper MARCA in 1958.

The award goes to the goalkeeper who has the lowest goals-to-games ratio at the end of the Spanish top-flight campaign.

Atletico Madrid goalie Jan Oblak and Barcelona legends Antoni Ramallets and Victor Valdés share the enviable feat as the most holders with five awards.

Madrid shot-stopper Courtois issues stern warning to Liverpool ahead of Champions League finals

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has come out boldly to warn Liverpool that they will have a tough outing when the two sides clash in the Champions League final.

Courtois was speaking after Real Madrid completed an incredible comeback against Manchester City. City thought they were heading into the final with only stoppage time left to play.

Brazilian youngster Rodrygo Goes sparked a comeback by scoring twice in quick succession. Red-hot striker Karim Benzema added a third and the winning goal in extra time.
