Saka Set for Newcastle Return as Gordon Ruled Out: Arsenal’s Premier League Title Bid Gets Double Boost

Arsenal have received a significant double boost ahead of their Premier League title showdown with Newcastle United, with key injury developments emerging from both camps ahead of what could be a defining fixture in the title race.

With five games remaining and Manchester City still in contention, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed that winger Bukayo Saka is expected to return to the matchday squad. “Bukayo is probably going to be in the squad, so good news,” Arteta stated in his pre-match press conference. Saka had been sidelined for a period due to fitness concerns, with the Arsenal head coach explaining the decision to manage the 23-year-old carefully. “We have given him some time because it was a moment where he was struggling to sustain the performances because he was not comfortable at all. He’s had the right treatment, the right space… now he’s in the most important part of the season and he’s back with us,” Arteta said.

The England international’s return comes at a critical juncture for the Gunners, who have been navigating a congested run-in. His creativity and goal threat in wide areas have been a significant factor in Arsenal’s campaign, and his availability will provide Arteta with an important attacking option at the Emirates Stadium.

Also potentially available for selection is defender Riccardo Calafiori, who is reportedly in line to return to the squad after his own injury spell. However, Dutch centre-back Jurrien Timber will not feature and remains sidelined, limiting Arteta’s defensive options.

The injury news from Newcastle United’s camp, meanwhile, compounds the challenge facing Eddie Howe’s side. Anthony Gordon has been ruled out of the fixture with a persistent hip injury, an issue that first emerged during Newcastle’s defeat to Crystal Palace. The winger did not train during the week leading up to the Arsenal match and will miss a second consecutive game as a result. Reports have confirmed the injury is genuine, with speculation linking his absence to summer transfer interest — including reported attention from Bayern Munich — dismissed in that context.

Gordon has been one of Newcastle’s most influential performers this season, registering 17 goals and five assists across all competitions. His absence weakens Howe’s attacking options considerably as the Magpies travel to north London.

Newcastle currently sit outside the Champions League qualification places, and the club faces a potentially significant summer period. Gordon’s future at St. James’ Park is among the key questions, with growing concerns around the club’s financial position potentially influencing major transfer decisions ahead of the next window.

For Arsenal, the timing of Saka’s return is particularly pertinent. The Gunners have experienced moments in recent seasons where late-season injuries to key players derailed their title ambitions — most notably during the 2022-23 campaign when they relinquished a commanding lead to Manchester City. With the current race finely balanced, squad depth and player availability in the final weeks of the season could prove decisive.

Both clubs are scheduled to meet in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes Premier League fixture, with Arsenal aiming to maintain pressure at the top of the table and Newcastle seeking to play spoilers despite their own challenges heading into the summer.
