Ryan Alebiosu: Arsenal Academy Graduate Staking His Claim as Super Eagles’ Next Right-Back with Blackburn Rovers

Ryan Alebiosu is doing more than surviving in the Championship — he is making a case that Nigeria’s coaching staff can no longer overlook. The 24-year-old right-back produced one of his most complete displays of the season on Tuesday when Blackburn Rovers travelled to Bramall Lane and dismantled Sheffield United 3-1, a result that all but secured the Lancashire club’s Championship survival.

Alebiosu’s contribution to that win was tangible. He registered an assist and was a consistent presence on the right flank throughout the contest. Defensively, his numbers were substantial: five clearances, two interceptions, six recoveries, and two headed clearances. In possession, he completed every dribble he attempted and created chances going forward. The one blemish was his crossing accuracy — only one of four attempts reached a teammate — an area that remains a work in progress.

Blackburn Rovers’ official social media celebrated the result with the message: “Never felt more like singin’ the blues”, a nod to their relief at securing safety and a reflection of the performance level that helped deliver it.

For Alebiosu, the Bramall Lane outing is part of a broader season of consistent output. Across a campaign in which Blackburn have spent considerable time battling the threat of relegation, he has accumulated five assists and six goal contributions in total — statistics that carry more weight when the context of a pressure-filled environment is factored in. Producing in a team fighting for its Championship status requires a level of composure and consistency that does not come easily.

The former Arsenal academy product made his senior international debut for Nigeria earlier this year at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, his first exposure to international football at the highest level on the continent. It was an early indication that Nigeria’s technical staff had been monitoring his development.

His emergence adds a new dimension to an increasingly competitive right-back conversation within the Super Eagles. Ola Aina remains one of Nigeria’s most experienced operators in the position, while Bright Osayi-Samuel — also currently active in the Championship — has been a regular fixture in the national team setup. Alebiosu’s profile differs from both: younger, still developing, and carrying the technical foundation of an Arsenal youth system that has historically produced players of high quality.

His ability to function as both a full-back and a wing-back provides head coach Eric Chelle with additional tactical options, particularly as the Super Eagles continue to evolve their system. At 24, Alebiosu has committed his international future to Nigeria, with his most productive years as a player still ahead of him.

The Championship has long served as a proving ground for Nigerian players working their way into — or back into — Super Eagles contention. Alebiosu is the latest in that line, and his current trajectory at Blackburn Rovers suggests his involvement at international level is likely to deepen rather than plateau.
