Maduka’s resignation came as a shock to many, especially Royal AM owner Shauwn Mkhize, who was out of the country at the time.

According to the publication, Maduka has not been paid what was due to him in June, nor has he received a promised bonus. The bonus was promised if the club secured CAF club competition next season, which they did.

Ditheko ‘Tiger’ Mototo, who also moved to Maritzburg United from Royal AM with Maduka, has been paid the monies owed to him. This has led to speculation that Maduka is being targeted by the individuals at the club.

Royal AM have since unveiled their new coach, hiring former Lamontville Golden Arrows manager Khabo Zondo, IOL reported.

Following the departure of coach John Maduka to Maritzburg United, Royal AM owner Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize said she was surprised as she didn’t expect it.

The 50-year-old Malawian mentor had guided Thwihli Thwahla to a surprise third-place finish in the DStv Premiership, which saw the team qualify for next season's CAF Confederations Cup competition.

"I must be honest, Maduka leaving the club was a surprise to me. I had to cut my trip [to the US] short to come back to SA to see if I could find a coach," Mkhize said.

John Maduka was officially unveiled as head coach of Maritzburg United after leaving Shauwn Mkhize's Royal AM

Rumours were circulating from Monday that Maduka had resigned from his post at the Shauwn Mkhize’s side, but it was never confirmed, iDiski Times reported.

Maduka has signed a three-year contract with the Team of Choice and will start at the club ahead of the 2022/23 Dstv Premiership season.
