  • All-time great Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been urged to make the sensational move to Royal AM
  • Khune has been starved of first-team football at the Amakhosi, appearing only once throughout the 2021-22 season
  • Besides considering time on his career, former Premier Soccer League goalkeeper believes looking beyond home would benefit him

In what would be the move to end all moves, Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has been encouraged to consider the ambitious Royal AM as his next next destination.

Khune has cut a forlorn sight on the bench at the Amakhosi this season. Apart from an appearance against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8 last August, the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper has been forced to watch from the sidelines as Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma and Daniel Akpeyi battled for the number 1 jersey in the team.

According to Kick Off, former Jomo Cosmos and Thanda Royal Zulu goalkeeper Aime Kitenge believes that the 35-year-old Khune should not entertain the thought of retirement, instead looking elsewhere for game time, saying:

"Khune is at the right age for a keeper to play and I don’t think he is ready to be a goalkeeper coach. I know that he loves Kaizer Chiefs because that is the only team that he has ever played for, but I think Khune should just move to Royal AM.
"John Maduka will not have a problem with having someone as experienced as Khune plus he will grow the club’s brand the way they want. Brian Baloyi also moved from Chiefs to Mamelodi Sundowns so Khune can do the same thing and leave Chiefs."

There were calls for Khune to consider becoming a goalkeeper coach at the club, with Khune quickly quashing this by tweeting:

"I’m still young to be a GK Coach Bro ,I have a lot to offer in this game ✌"

Itumeleng Khune experiences worst season as a professional footballer, has played just once for Kaizer Chiefs

Once the golden boy of South African football, Itumeleng Khune is now resigned to warming the bench at Kaizer Chiefs.

As reported by Sports Brief, Itu is experiencing a drought spell of historic proportions from an appearances point of view, playing just once for the Amakhosi this season.

Khune’s only appearance for Chiefs came in the MTN8 competition in August 2021 against Mamelodi Sundowns.
