Cristiano Ronaldo has urged players in the Saudi Pro League to show greater respect toward match officials, dismissing accusations that referees systematically favour Al Nassr FC. The Portuguese forward made his position clear following a fractious 2-0 victory over Al-Ahli that descended into a post-match altercation involving players from both sides.
The flashpoint came at full-time when Al-Ahli defender Merih Demiral aggressively confronted the referee, angered by the official’s decision not to dismiss Kingsley Coman following a heavy challenge. The dispute quickly escalated, drawing in players from both teams before intervention from teammates brought the situation under control.
Ronaldo was subsequently pulled into the controversy after Demiral appeared to suggest that Al Nassr benefit from favourable treatment by officials. The two players exchanged gestures on the pitch — Demiral pointing to his AFC Champions League medals, while Ronaldo responded by holding up five fingers, a reference to his five UEFA Champions League titles.
Speaking to Fabrizio Romano after the match, the 41-year-old was unequivocal in his defence of the officials and his rejection of the bias claims. “They must respect the referees; even if they make mistakes, they are human and they do errors,” Ronaldo said.
The forward also warned that continued public criticism of referees threatens the league’s broader ambitions. “These kinds of statements are not good for the league. We must put a stop to this if we want to compete with the best European leagues,” he stressed. Ronaldo additionally hinted at a more expansive end-of-season statement, saying: “I will speak at the end of the season about many real matters. I was the first to come to this league, and the rest came because of me.”
On the pitch, Ronaldo again found the scoresheet in the win, taking his career tally to 970 goals — a figure that continues to set him apart as one of the sport’s most prolific scorers in history. The victory extended Al Nassr’s lead at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings to eight points, strengthening their position as the title race enters its final stages.
Ronaldo’s arrival in Saudi Arabia in January 2023 was widely credited with accelerating the league’s global profile, a point he referenced directly in his post-match comments. Several high-profile European players, including Demiral, have since moved to the Saudi Pro League, which has invested heavily in international talent as part of a broader effort to raise its standing in world football.
The incident adds another layer of tension to an already competitive title run-in, with the officiating debate now a public flashpoint between clubs. How the Saudi Pro League authorities respond to the controversy — and whether any disciplinary action follows — is likely to shape the mood in the division as the season draws to a close.
