  • Napoli got the better of AS Roma and went 13 points ahead on the Serie A table
  • Roma coach Jose Mourinho posted a team photo and praised them after losing
  • The post has generated heat on the Portuguese manager for 'celebrating a loss'

Jose Mourinho is a serial winner, a manager that has won everywhere he has managed, and a personality that frowns on failure as exhibited many times in the past.

Things took a different turn yesterday however, as the Portuguese tactician appeared to be celebrating a loss by posting a photo on Instagram, following a 2-1 loss to league leaders Napoli.

Mourinho got his players to assemble in the dressing room as if they had won a trophy and uploaded the photo to his social media account - and got fans talking.

What did Mourinho post?

The players did not appear happy in the group photo and some believe they were forced to take it, unlike the last time when Roma won the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League, as noted by Sun UK.

The Special one captioned the picture:

"What a TEAM what a SPIRIT what a PERFORMANCE. Let's go... See you on Wednesday at the Olimpico."

Fans react to loser's celebration

The negative comments were mostly from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur fans, while some diehard Mourinho fans praised the post.

@isakmufc wrote:

"Mourinho celebrating losses now. What a fall from grace"

@reinaldodcg9 wrote:

"They showed team spirit and attitude in the second half. Mou knows how important it is to lose a game in that way than being surpassed in effort and attitude. And Roma didn’t lack any of that today. Respect for Mou and his process there."

@atlantis134 tweeted:

"Bros celebrating losses now. This is what coaching spurs does to a man"

@_ikenna_ wrote:

"They lost…this isn’t the same Mourinho I used to hate. Lol"

Sports Brief gives a verdict

Sports Brief believes the image has been purposefully misunderstood by many, possibly for the sake of fans' respective agendas.

"Jose Mourinho has and will never celebrate failure. The message was intended to hold a falling team together, after a disappointing loss in which they had a spirited performance, amid reported rifts with Rick Karsdorp and Nicolo Zaniolo."

Sports Brief believes the Special One cannot afford a dressing room that is lost, and instead is focusing on a squad who make up for quality in team spirit and the manager's legendary expertise.

Tottenham sets unwanted Mourinho record

Sports Brief earlier reported on Tottenham setting Mourinho an unwanted record in his career, as the only club he managed to not win a trophy.

The Portuguese coach said in a 2020 interview - while still manager of the club - that Spurs would not be his only club without silverware.

After his departure, the club has gone through Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte as managers and Ryan Mason as interim coach.
