  • Salernitana vs Roma Serie A clash ended in a 1-0 win for Jose Mourinho's charges
  • Bryan Cristante scored the only goal of the match, which separated the two sides in the first half of the clash
  • Roma will now switch their focus to their second game of the season set for Monday, August 22, against Cremonese

Jose Mourinho's AS Roma have kicked off the new Serie A campaign on a positive note after seeing off Salernitana in their season opener staged at Stadio Arechi on Sunday, August 14.

The match saw Mourinho unleash his new-look Roma side, with summer arrival Paulo Dybala making the starting XI.

The veteran coach partnered the Argentine ace in attack alongside Tammy Abraham and Nicolò Zaniolo as Tonny Vilhena and Antonio Candreva debuted for Salernitana.

Despite Roma's arguably strong lineup, they struggled to break Salernitana's stubborn defence in the opening exchanges.

How Roma sunk Salerniatana at Stadio Arechi

Zaniolo had two golden chances to put Roma ahead in the early minutes, only for the Italian to miss the target on both occasions.

The 23-year-old drew the first blood inside four minutes of action, but his left-footed shot from the left side of the six-yard box was saved in the centre of the goal.

The visitors eventually broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute through Bryan Cristante, who fired home the opener from outside the box into the bottom right corner.

Abraham had a chance to double the advantage from Dybala's well-floated cross minutes into the break but missed the target with his header.

Efforts by the home side to score at least a consolation for the remainder of the clash proved futile, with Cristante's goal the only difference in the clash.

Roma are now scheduled to take on Cremonese in their second Serie A match of the new season on Monday, August 22.

Mourinho dismisses Roma's title chances

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Jose Mourinho has dismissed suggestions that AS Roma have what it takes to win the Italian top-flight league this season.

Roma have sealed a number of incredible signings this summer, sparking propositions that they are favourites to win the Scudetto.

However, Mourinho contends his side are far from getting to that level, with the veteran Portuguese tactician dismissing that suggestion altogether.
