Robert Lewandowski’s future at Barcelona is far from certain, and Manchester United are among the clubs paying close attention. The Polish striker’s contract with the Catalan club expires in June, and according to reports from Marca, Barcelona have tabled a renewal offer on reduced wages — a proposal that has yet to be accepted.
Lewandowski turns 38 this summer, but his numbers suggest his performances remain at an elite level. Across 41 appearances this season, the veteran forward has contributed 17 goals and four assists, figures that would make him an attractive option for several clubs regardless of age. Over the course of his career, he has scored an astonishing 716 goals in 1,029 matches — a record that underscores his sustained output across multiple leagues and competitions.
According to reports from The Mirror, Manchester United are monitoring the situation closely and could pursue a move should Lewandowski become available on a free transfer. The prospect of signing a striker of his calibre without a transfer fee would represent a significant opportunity for the club, which is working to strengthen its attacking options ahead of the new season.
What adds an intriguing dimension to this reported interest is Lewandowski’s own admission about a near-move to Old Trafford earlier in his career. Speaking to BBC Sport, the striker revealed: “To Manchester United I decided and said yes. I wanted to join Manchester United, to see Alex Ferguson, but Dortmund could not sell me.” The comments, made in reference to his time at Borussia Dortmund, indicate that an association with the club was once a genuine ambition for the player.
Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022 and has gone on to make a substantial impact at the Camp Nou, becoming one of the club’s most reliable goalscorers since his arrival. His current deal, however, was always scheduled to run until the end of this season, and the two parties have yet to reach an agreement on an extension.
Manchester United, currently managed under a new era following significant structural changes at the club, are in the process of rebuilding their squad. Adding a forward with Lewandowski’s experience and scoring record — even on a short-term basis — would offer immediate returns, though questions around his age and long-term fit would need to be considered in any negotiations.
No formal offer from United has been reported at this stage, and the situation remains fluid. Whether Lewandowski opts to extend his stay in Spain, explore the possibility of a move to the Premier League, or consider other options remains to be seen as the June transfer window approaches.
