Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha has set his sights on the highest honours in club and international football, identifying the FIFA World Cup as the pinnacle of his ambitions — a statement that carries significant weight given his eligibility to represent Nigeria at senior level.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the young forward was candid about his targets at both club and international level. “For club, Champions League and Premier League as well,” Ngumoha said. “I think the main one is World Cup. Celebrating with your nation internationally, being the best country in the world, that’s crazy.”

Ngumoha also set his sights on individual greatness, expressing belief that the sport’s most prestigious personal award is within his reach. “I am so confident in myself, hopefully a Ballon d’Or. But just being regarded as one of the best players that has ever played football,” he added.

The 16-year-old attributed his self-assurance in part to the formative influence of his older brother. “It comes from me and also my brother. I think he showed me real belief from young. I remember when he was younger, he used to skip college to train me,” Ngumoha explained.

The forward, who moved to Anfield from Chelsea’s academy, has made a notable impact during what has been a breakout campaign. Despite limited opportunities, he has registered one goal across 13 Premier League appearances this season, offering glimpses of the ability that has drawn considerable attention from observers across the game.

Although Ngumoha has previously featured for England at youth international level, his Nigerian heritage means he remains eligible to commit his senior international future to the Super Eagles. Nigeria head coach Éric Chelle is reportedly monitoring the teenager’s progression closely, with sources suggesting the West African nation views Ngumoha as a potential long-term asset for the squad.

The question of his international allegiance remains unresolved. Nigeria have historically benefited from dual-eligible players based in Europe, with several key members of the current Super Eagles squad having represented other nations at youth level before switching to Nigeria. Should Ngumoha opt for the Green and White, he would become one of the most high-profile young talents to declare for the country in recent years.

Ngumoha’s emergence at Liverpool has already drawn praise from head coach Arne Slot, who acknowledged the significance of the youngster’s contributions at senior level at such a young age. His continued development over the remainder of the season will be closely watched both by Liverpool’s coaching staff and by officials within the Nigeria Football Federation, as the window for a senior international commitment draws closer.
