The Spanish giants had one foot in the quarterfinals after recording a resounding 5-2 victory in the first leg at Anfield three weeks ago.

They then got the job done thanks to a 78th-minute solitary strike from their captain Karim Benzema, to advance to the last eight on an emphatic 6-2 aggregate.

However, the 14-time European champions showed true class after referee, Felix Zwayer blew his whistle to bring the game to an end.

Instead of the defending champions playing their usual Hala Madrid anthem, they showed respect to Liverpool and played the Reds anthem You'll Never Walk Alone at the 81,000-capacity stadium.

According to Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, Los Blancos played the Reds' anthem as a sign of gratitude after the Premier League club previously paid tribute to the club's honorary president, Amancio Amaro.

Amaro passed away on February 21, the same day Liverpool hosted Real Madrid in the first-leg encounter. Before the game, the Reds laid flowers at Anfield, a gesture Ancelotti's side reciprocated by playing the losing team's anthem.

"The tribute to Liverpool has been very good because they are a gentlemen's club," Ancelotti said in his post-match press conference, via Euro Foot.

"They honoured Amancio in the first leg and it's a fair gesture from our club towards them."
