  • Liverpool fans could not help but applaud Luka Modric for a masterful performance at Anfield on February 21
  • Real Madrid came from two goals down to secure an emphatic 5-2 victory and control of their UCL round of 16 leg
  • Both Modric and Karim Benzema keep defying age as they continue with top performances in their twilight days

Luka Modric was applauded by a section of Liverpool fans in a wonderful show of respect after his masterclass at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Croatian, despite being 37, exhibited some of his best football once again to help Los Blancos from 2-0 down to score five goals at Anfield, effectively becoming the first team to do so in history.

After going two goals up through Darwin Nunez and Mohammed Salah, Liverpool suffered a terrible collapse and it all had to do with the brilliance of Modric and his counterpart, Karim Benzema.

Benzema scored two goals in the second half, while Modric created a couple for his side and was consistently a menace with his commanding presence in the midfield.

Carlo Ancelotti decided to take them off in the 87th minute and the pair exited to roaring applause from the Anfield faithful, who had no choice but to recognise their greatness.

Liverpool catching no breaks

Meanwhile, Real Madrid became the first team to score five times against Liverpool in a European match since Ajax in 1966, as reported by TalkSport.

It is becoming a familiar pattern with Los Blancos, who seem to always have a formula for beating Jurgen Klopp’s Reds when it matters.

Having been beaten in the final in 2018 and 2022, the latest defeat means Liverpool have lost six in their last seven games against Real Madrid.

Alisson howler gifts Real Madrid

Sports Brief also reported on how Alisson’s blunder on Tuesday helped Real Madrid mount a famous Anfield comeback.

Receiving a back pass from his teammate, the keeper miskicked his clearance which deflected off Vinicius into the net.

With the scores 2-1, the Brazilian's pressure on the Liverpool defence eventually paid off with the horrific error by Alisson.
