  • Karim Benzema has won 24 trophies with Real Madrid but isn't the club's most successful player
  • Brazilian defender Marcelo currently holds the title of the club's most successful star with 25 trophies
  • Benzema could surpass Marcelo this season as Los Blancos are still in the running in three competitions

Karim Benzema has been crucial to Real Madrid's success over the years and he's closing in on more history with the club.

The French attacker is edging closer to becoming the most decorated player in the Spanish giants' history, but one player stands in his way.

Benzema's chances of making history

The Frenchman needs just two more trophies to become Madrid's most successful player and could achieve it as early as the end of this season.

The club are still in the running for three trophies this season, but will face stiff competition in their quest to win them.

Madrid are second in La Liga but trail Barcelona by eight points. They are also in the running for the Champions League title, but face Liverpool in the Round of 16.

They're also in the running for the Copa del Rey, but Barcelona stand in their way in that tournament as well.

Benzema's uncertain future

Benzema's contract with Madrid expires at the end of the current season, but Carlo Ancelotti doesn't expect him to go anywhere, Soccer Laduma reported.

The Italian manager recently explained that the Frenchman was enjoying good form following the World Cup and he expected him to do the same next season.

Madrid win Club World Cup

Sports Brief earlier reported on Real Madrid being crowned Club World Cup champions for a record fifth time, after beating Al Hilal on Saturday in Morocco.

Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde struck twice each, while Benzema also scored on his return from injury in a spectacular victory over their Saudi Arabian opponents.

Ancelotti's side, who qualified as UEFA Champions League winners last season, had far too much attacking quality for their opponents to handle.
