“It was the game we expected, a very tough and difficult one. We haven’t had the luck to handle it. We’ve had opportunities and we haven’t taken advantage of them. It was difficult to play between the lines, we tried and it didn’t go well,” he said.

An early own goal

Madrid went behind as early as the 13th minute after Nacho’s defensive header flew into the back of the Los Blancos net. Prior to the goal, Mallorca looked the more likely to score.

A missed penalty

Madrid did have a chance to level matters when they were given a penalty in the 57th minute. Los Blancos were given the penalty after Predrag Rajković brought down Vinicius Junior in the box. Marco Asensio stepped up to the spot but failed to beat Rajković in the Mallorca goal.

Barcelona could pull away

With Madrid once again dropping points, Barcelona have the chance to extend their lead over their rivals to as much as 11 points before Ancelotti’s men play again in La Liga. Madrid now turns their attention to the Club World Cup before facing Elche in La Liga on February 15.

Why Asensio took Madrid's penalty

Marco Asensio’s penalty miss proved costly as Real Madrid suffered their third league defeat of the season.

Madrid were beaten 1-0 by Mallorca after an own goal by Nacho in the 13th minute of the game, Sports Brief reported.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has now explained why he selected Asensio to take the penalty over Rodrygo.
