Furious football fans have resorted to social media to blast Federico Valverde's partner for calling Argentina superstar Lionel Messi the greatest footballer ever.

The two-time world champions began their route to the Grand Finale with a disappointing 2-1 loss to minnows Saudi Arabia and since that setback Scaloni's charges have not looked back.

And Argentina journalist Mina Bonino, who is the partner of Valverde, took to Twitter to laud Messi for his performance in the ongoing tournament.

According to SportBible, the presenter shared a photo of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner holding the Man of the Match award, with the caption:

"The GOAT. The photo that is constantly repeated, all matches. And he even gave it up in one.
“NOBODY can deny that he is the best player in world history. Even at 35 years old, with a pass he totally changes the game. It is at an impressive level.”

However, Bonino's tweet about the former Barcelona superstar might have infuriated Real Madrid fans, who criticised her for supporting Messi.

The Los Blancos fans instead heaped praises on legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Croatia captain Luka Modric.

Bonino's Twitter has since been put on private at the time of writing, with the tweet about Messi no longer publicly visible.

Messi chalks enviable milestone

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Lionel Messi has inked his name in history books following his goal against Croatia in the World Cup.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has been in sensational form in Qatar as he pushes to inspire Argentina to World Cup glory.

Messi has already bagged five goals so far in the tournament, with his latest strike coming against Croatia in the semi-final of the 2022 edition of the World Cup.
