Gareth Bale congratulated Karim Benzema after the Frenchman won the 2022 Ballon d'Or award on Monday night.

Benzema was named the men's Ballon d'Or winner at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, following his remarkable performance in the 2021-22 season.

He fended off competition from Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski (4th), Kevin De Bruyne (3rd) and Sadio Mane (2nd) to become the fifth Frenchman to win the prestigious prize.

Following his crowning moment on Monday night, the 34-year-old has been singled out for unending praise by football fans, pundits, coaches and fellow footballers.

Bale, who played alongside Benzema for nine seasons, joined the list of professionals to congratulate the former Olympique Lyonnais striker for his milestone.

The Welshman, who currently plays in the Major League Soccer for Los Angeles FC, took to Twitter to sing the praises of Big Benz.

He tweeted: "Congratulations my friend" accompanied by a fist emoji to show his support of Benzema.

Benzema receives Ballon d'Or award

Karim Benzema clinched the 2022 edition of the Ballon d'Or on the back of a sterling campaign with Real Madrid, which culminated in Champions League success.

Benzema, who was the overwhelming favourite ahead of the awards ceremony, was rated ahead of Bayern Munich's Sadio Mane and Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona.

The Real Madrid frontman scored an outstanding 44 goals in 46 games for Los Blancos, including 15 in the UEFA Champions League.

Bale scores US solo goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Wales international Gareth Bale scored a wonderful solo goal to help Los Angeles FC defeat Real Salt Lake 4-1 on Saturday, August 6 in the Major League Soccer.

The 33-year-old joined the MLS club following his exit from Real Madrid, after spending nine years at Santiago Bernabeu.

Bale is yet to start a game for his new club and was on the bench once again in their match against their Western conference rivals.
