  • Football fans have suggested Karim Benzema's slow start to the La Liga is down to Robert Lewandowski's presence in the league
  • Lewandowski has taken to the La Liga like a duck to water, scoring a stunning nine goals in seven La Liga matches
  • Meanwhile, Benzema's missed penalty against Osasuna means the Frenchman failed to add to his three-goal tally this campaign

Real Madrid's leading marksman Karim Benzema has been accused of coiling into his shell following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski.

The accusation stems from the contrasting fortunes Benzema and Lewandowski have had in the current campaign.

Benzema, who won the top scorer's award in La Liga last season, has struggled to hit the heights of last term, scoring on three occasions in five outings.

Lewandowski's latest strike catapulted the Catalan giants to the summit of the league log, while equalling Messi's club record of the most goals in the first seven games of the season.

The eye-watering stats in favour of the Poland captain has convinced social media users he is intimidating the Madrid forward.

@EdmundOris tweeted:

"Lewandowski has come and immediately he has taken Top Spot from him as best player in La Liga."

@MiaSanMane added:

"One season and Benzema has gone back to ghosting."

"Benzema isn't that good btw."

@Unreal_Kev believes Lewandowski's presence in the La Liga has mounted pressure on Benzema:

"Benzema is feeling the pressure because this gunman is in the country. Everyone is a gangster until the real gangster walks in."

@ANKAMAGYIMI stressed the Madrid man is scared by Lewandowski's presence:

"I’m convinced Lewandowski’s presence in the league is frightening him."

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Karim Benzema betrayed the trust of Real Madrid teammate Vinicius Junior as Los Blancos dropped points for the first time this term.

Benzema, who was returning from an injury lay-off, had the opportunity to keep Real Madrid's 100 per cent start to the 2022-23 season intact.

The Frenchman however, who scored a staggering 44 goals in 46 matches across all competitions last season, missed from 12 yards as Madrid shared the spoils with 10-man Osasuna on Sunday, reported BBC.
