This season's Ballon d'Or award appears to be a one-horse race, with many clamouring for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema.

Top football icons, both past and current active players, have backed the Frenchman to succeed Lionel Messi as this year's winner of the Ballon d'Or.

In a post on Twitter, sighted by Sports Brief, hundreds of fans took to the streets to chant Benzema's name for this year's Ballon d'Or award.

The 34-year-old forward failed to add to his impressive tally of 44 goals in 46 games in the Champions League finals, however, he emerged as a five-time winner of Europe's premier club competition when Madrid pipped Liverpool last Saturday.

Benzema's stellar campaign was crowned with a Champions League winner's medal on top of La Liga success last Saturday to underline an impressive season which has firmly put him in the driving seat for the Ballon d'Or award.

The Frenchman, who bagged an incredible 44 goals in 46 games, is the overwhelming favourite to win this year's coveted diadem.

Fans treat Real Madrid players to heroic welcome after Champions League glory

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid fans gave their players a heroic welcome on Sunday as they flooded the streets of the Spanish capital to celebrate their 14th European glory.

The Spanish giants defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the final of the UEFA Champions League at the Stade de France on Saturday. Vinicius Jr's 58th-minute strike made the difference.

In photos shared on social media, thousands of fans greeted the players while the team paraded the trophies won this season.
