  • Argentine captain Lionel Messi has shared his thoughts on Real Madrid's victory in the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League
  • Paris Saint-Germain's season was marked by a Champions League exit at the hands of eventual winners Real Madrid
  • But Lionel Messi doesn't believe Los Blancos are the best team in Europe despite beating PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City en route to the final

Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi believes Real Madrid were not the best team to win the recently ended Champions League.

The Los Blancos won the 2021/2022 Champions League after beating Liverpool 1-0 in a pulsating final at the Stade de France on Saturday, May 28.

A solitary goal from Vinicius Junior was enough for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to claim victory.

Real Madrid defeated PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City en route to the final – where they then defeated Liverpool to win the Champions League.

But Messi claims Carlo Ancelotti's side were not the best team in the continental competition this year, although he emphasised that their inferiority in skill should not take away from their champion mentality.

Messi told TYC Sport, via Goal:

“The Champions League? The best team don't always win.
“Real Madrid were not the best team this season, without taking away any merit because they are the Champions League champions and they are always there.
“Losing against Real Madrid in the Chamions League? The Real Madrid tie killed us. It killed me and the whole dressing room in general. We really wanted to win the Champions League.
“I know what Real Madrid is like, I've lived it for many years, all my life. They score a goal out of nowhere and they automatically change the game.
“Against Real Madrid, if a strange play or a goal happens, it changes the game. I already knew it could happen [Real Madrid comeback] and it happened to us and to all the teams [Chelsea, City and Liverpool] and it's not the first time.”

Lionel Messi Admits Madrid’s Karim Benzema Deserves to Win 2022 Ballon d’Or

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi is convinced Real Madrid's Karim Benzema is the undisputed favourite to succeed him as the best player in the world.

Benzema's stellar campaign was crowned with a Champions League winner's medal on top of La Liga success last Saturday to underline an impressive season which has firmly put him in the driving seat for the Ballon d'Or award.

The Frenchman, who bagged an incredible 44 goals in 46 games, is the overwhelming favourite to win this year's coveted diadem.
