  • Karim Benzema was on fire in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win in the Champions League first-leg clash against Chelsea
  • The Frenchman ripped apart the Blues’ defence to net a hat-trick to put his side a step closer to the semifinal
  • It was gathered that being a Muslim, Benzema fasted all day before the encounter and broke his fast just 13 minutes before kickoff

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was fasting all day before featuring against Chelsea in the Champions League, scoring a hat-trick.

The 34-year-old Muslim is also participating in the ongoing Ramadan as part of his faith and despite not eating and drinking all day, he navigated the entire Chelsea defence with ease.

It was gathered that the Frenchman broke his fast just thirteen minutes before the start of the game and went on to produce one of his finest nights in European football.

Benzema netted a hat-trick on the night to give his side a giant stride towards the semifinal of the competition.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Benzema revealed that taking part in Ramadan has no impact on his game.

He said as per SPORTbible:

"No impact, Ramadan is part of my life and my religion makes Ramadan an obligation. For me, it’s very important and I feel good when I’m fasting."

When asked what he's grateful for in life, he replied:

"I am grateful for being in good health."

Benzema has now scored back-to-back Champions League hat-tricks, having destroyed Paris Saint-Germain in the last round.

Furious Tuchel reacts

Meanwhile, Tuchel's side are facing the end of their reign as Champions League holders following a bitter night at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Asked if the tie was still winnable, Tuchel replied:

"No. Not at the moment, no. Because we have to find our level back, I don't know where it is since the international break.
"If things change, maybe, but how many clubs in worldwide football could do what we need, three goals difference? How often does this happen?"

Villarreal stun Champions League favourites Bayern Munich

Sports Brief earlier reported that Villarreal inflicted a shock 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday as Arnaut Danjuma's strike boosted the Spanish team's hopes of causing a huge upset in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Danjuma diverted in Dani Parejo's shot in the eighth minute at La Ceramica to seal a surprise win, with Bayern perhaps even fortunate not to be further behind going into the second leg in Germany next week.

Gerard Moreno hit the post and then curled a long-range effort agonisingly wide after Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer had skewed a clearance, briefly leaving his own net gaping.
