Spanish football was thrown in a state of mourning after authorities announced the passing on of Real Madrid legend Paco Gento at the age of 88 years.

Paco Gento, a veteran of two FIFA World Cups and the only man in history to win six UEFA European Cups with Real Madrid as reported by FIFA.

According to Spanish news outlet Marca, Gento had been the honorary president of Real Madrid until his death, a position he had inherited from his friend and former teammate Alfredo Di Stefano.

"Real Madrid C.F., its president and board of directors deeply regret the death of Francisco Gento, honorary president of Real Madrid and one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football," a Real Madrid statement read.

At Real Madrid, Paco Gento played 600 games and scored 182 goals. He was an international with the Spanish national team on 43 occasions.
