Real Madrid Players Reportedly Oppose Mourinho Return, Back Klopp as Florentino Pérez Pushes Ahead

Senior Real Madrid players have allegedly labelled José Mourinho a "ticking time bomb" as president Florentino Pérez reportedly pursues the Portuguese manager's return to the Santiago Bernabéu. The squad and several board members are said to prefer former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp for the role.

Significant internal opposition has reportedly emerged within Real Madrid over president Florentino Pérez’s push to reappoint José Mourinho as manager, with senior players said to have described the 63-year-old as a “ticking time bomb,” according to a report from Cadena SER journalist Gastón Álvarez.

Pérez is understood to be pursuing Mourinho on a largely unilateral basis, calculated on the belief that the high-profile Portuguese manager’s appointment would serve as a distraction from a run of consecutive disappointing seasons. Mourinho is being considered to replace the outgoing Álvaro Arbeloa in the dugout at the Santiago Bernabéu.

However, according to the Cadena SER report, resistance to that plan is substantial. Not only are members of the playing squad reportedly opposed to Mourinho’s return, but several senior figures within the club’s boardroom have also voiced reservations. Both the players and boardroom executives are said to favour former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, whom they view as a more stabilising and broadly appealing candidate for the position.

The reported dressing-room discontent emerged just days after Kylian Mbappé appeared to publicly signal support for Mourinho’s potential return, having reportedly liked a social media post endorsing the move. The marquee forward’s apparent endorsement stood in contrast to the mood attributed to the wider squad.

Mourinho’s relationship with the current playing group has not been helped by recent controversy off the pitch. The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager drew widespread criticism for comments he directed at Brazil international Vinícius Jr. during a racism row involving Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni. Those remarks are reportedly a central factor in the players’ apprehension about working under him.

Mourinho’s previous stint at Real Madrid, which ran from 2010 to 2013, also looms large over the debate. While his tenure produced notable silverware — including the 2010/11 Copa del Rey and the 2011/12 La Liga title, claimed with a then-record 100 points — it ultimately unravelled amid serious internal conflict. His departure left lasting damage within the dressing room, most notably straining his relationship with club legend and longtime captain Iker Casillas, whose treatment during that period remains a contentious chapter in the club’s recent history.

Mourinho, 63, is currently the manager of Benfica in Portugal. Should Pérez press ahead with his reported pursuit, the appointment would mark the Portuguese tactician’s second spell at the Bernabéu and one of the more contested managerial returns in recent European football history. No official confirmation or announcement has been made by Real Madrid at this stage.
