Pep Guardiola Backs Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal Ahead of Title-Defining Premier League Clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has pushed back against widespread criticism of Arsenal’s tactical approach, expressing admiration for Mikel Arteta’s side just days before the two clubs meet in a potentially title-deciding Premier League fixture on April 19, 2026.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Guardiola dismissed characterisations of Arsenal’s style as “risk-averse” and “dreary”, offering a pointed counter-narrative to the scrutiny the North London club has faced this season. “I enjoy watching them. I learn a lot in many, many things. And the people, what they want is to win,” he said, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The remarks carry added weight given the personal and professional bond between the two managers. Arteta served as Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City during back-to-back Premier League title-winning campaigns in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons before departing to take charge at Arsenal in December 2019.

Beyond tactics, Guardiola also addressed the motivational gulf that separates the two clubs heading into Sunday’s showdown. Arsenal have not won the Premier League title in 22 years — a drought stretching back to the 2003/04 Invincibles season under Arsène Wenger. Guardiola acknowledged that historical weight as a factor his own squad cannot replicate. “It’s been 22 years without winning the Premier League. In that aspect, we cannot fight. They have something that makes them unique,” the Catalan coach observed.

The admission is a candid one from a manager whose City side have dominated the English top flight in recent years, claiming six Premier League titles since 2012. For Arsenal, the 2025/26 campaign represents one of their strongest bids for a league championship in the post-Wenger era, with the club regularly competing at the summit of the table.

The fixture on April 19 carries significant weight for the destination of the 2025/26 Premier League trophy, with the two sides locked in a tight title race. A result in either direction could prove decisive in the final weeks of the season, making Guardiola’s public comments all the more notable in their tone and timing.

Arsenal’s playing style under Arteta has polarised opinion among pundits and supporters throughout the season, with critics pointing to a perceived lack of attacking fluidity in certain matches. Guardiola’s defence of that approach — particularly from a coach widely regarded as one of the game’s foremost tactical innovators — is likely to draw considerable attention ahead of kick-off.
