Spanish international midfielder Pedri has rewritten Barcelona’s history books, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to make 200 starts following the Catalan side’s 2-1 LaLiga victory over Osasuna in Pamplona on Saturday.

The milestone came when Pedri was precisely 23 years and 159 days old, displacing a record that had belonged to Lionel Messi, who reached the same landmark at 23 years and 227 days. Messi’s record had itself supplanted the previous benchmark set by club legend Xavi Hernández, who accumulated 200 starts at 24 years and 44 days — meaning the record has now passed through three of the most celebrated midfield and attacking talents in Barcelona’s modern era.

Messi’s mark had stood for well over a decade before Saturday’s result in Pamplona brought Pedri’s name to the fore. The three points secured that evening also moved Barcelona closer to clinching the 2025/26 LaLiga title, adding further weight to what was already a significant night for the Canary Islander.

Pedri made his official debut for the Blaugrana during the 2020/21 season as a highly regarded 17-year-old and has since established himself as a central figure in the team’s structure under head coach Hansi Flick. His technical intelligence and ability to control the tempo of play have made him integral to Barcelona’s system, and his domestic medal collection already includes two Spanish league titles, with a potential third now within reach this season.

Despite the magnitude of the achievement, the record may not stand for long. Two other La Masia products — teenage winger Lamine Yamal and centre-back Pau Cubarsí — are both regular starters under Flick and are on course, mathematically, to surpass Pedri’s age record in the coming seasons given their current trajectories and ages.

The development underlines a broader generational shift at Camp Nou, where a core of young, homegrown talent is driving the club’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe. Pedri’s consistency and durability — particularly notable given the injury disruptions he has navigated earlier in his career — make reaching 200 starts at his age a considerable feat in the context of modern football.

With LaLiga title confirmation potentially imminent and European competition still in the calendar, Pedri’s record-breaking campaign looks set to be among the most decorated of his career to date.
