Paul Merson Warns Arsenal Players to Avoid Media After Bournemouth Defeat Deepens Title Race Crisis

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has called Saturday's 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth a "terrible" result, urging the squad to shield themselves from public criticism as their Premier League title challenge faces mounting pressure.

Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions suffered another significant blow on Saturday when Bournemouth claimed a 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium, extending the Cherries’ unbeaten run to 12 matches and compounding a troubling period for Mikel Arteta‘s side.

The defeat was the third in Arsenal’s last four league games, a run that has also seen them exit both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Despite leading the Premier League table for the majority of the season, the Gunners’ recent collapse has opened the door for their rivals to close the gap at the top.

Speaking on Sky Sports following the defeat, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson did not hold back in his assessment of the performance. “It will have been smashed to pieces,” Merson said, referring to the team’s confidence. “Now all of a sudden, if Man City win all their games, they’re level on points. Plus they have got two games to make the goal difference up.”

Merson also issued a direct message to the Arsenal squad regarding the external noise surrounding the club. “This is now, you’ve got to keep away from the press, the papers and social media because everybody will be saying ‘here comes the melt’,” he said. “That is a terrible, terrible result today. Bad performance as well. No energy, no ‘let’s go and take the game to Bournemouth’, it was sloppy.”

The timing of the defeat is particularly significant given the fixtures ahead. Manchester City are scheduled to face Chelsea on Sunday before a highly anticipated clash with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium the following week — a ground where Arteta has yet to win as Gunners manager. City’s schedule is then completed with a home fixture against relegation-threatened Burnley, meaning three consecutive victories could lift them to the summit of the table on goal difference.

Despite this scenario, Merson has backed Chelsea to deny City a win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, which would offer Arsenal a degree of relief heading into what promises to be a pivotal final stretch of the season.

Arsenal’s current difficulties echo concerns raised in previous seasons, where the club built substantial leads at the top of the table only to falter in the closing weeks. The 2022-23 campaign, in which Arsenal led for much of the season before ultimately finishing five points behind champions Manchester City, remains a painful reference point for supporters and analysts alike.

With several crucial fixtures still to play across the Premier League’s run-in, the coming weeks will determine whether Arsenal are able to recover their form and composure, or whether their title challenge unravels for a third consecutive season.
