Arsenal suffered a damaging 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, a result that has significant implications for the title race with just weeks remaining in the season.

Goals from Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki secured all three points for the home side, giving City a crucial foothold in the battle for the championship. The result means Manchester City now trail Arsenal by three points but hold a game in hand — a match against Burnley scheduled for Wednesday that could alter the standings further.

Although Arsenal currently hold a marginally better goal difference of +37 compared to City’s +36, that advantage could be erased depending on the scoreline when City face Burnley midweek.

One of the more debated moments from Sunday’s clash was Arteta’s decision to withdraw Eberechi Eze, who had been handed a rare starting berth on the left wing ahead of regular options Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. The Crystal Palace loanee had been among Arsenal’s more influential players before his removal.

Former Arsenal and France midfielder Patrick Vieira, speaking on Sky Sports, voiced his dissatisfaction with the substitution. Vieira suggested Eze had been growing into the game and offered Arsenal a genuine attacking threat at the time of his withdrawal.

“He didn’t stay on the left-hand side,” Vieira said. “He came inside and created the overload and that was, I think, the tactical plan. It was really interesting because he touched the ball a lot.”

Vieira continued: “I was a bit disappointed, to be honest, that he came off because I think he was getting into the game and he could create chances for scoring goals because he’s got that quality. Taking him off, I think I was disappointed to see him off.”

The defeat is a notable setback for Arsenal, who had entered the fixture hoping to extend their advantage at the top of the table. Eze’s selection ahead of established wide options had been seen as a tactical gamble by Arteta, one that appeared to be paying dividends before the substitution drew scrutiny.

Vieira, who made over 200 Premier League appearances for Arsenal between 1996 and 2005 and captained the club during their 2003-04 unbeaten title-winning season, carries considerable weight when assessing the Gunners’ tactical decisions. His comments reflect a broader conversation around Arsenal’s in-game management during high-stakes fixtures.

With the Premier League title race entering its final weeks, Arsenal’s ability to respond to this defeat will be closely monitored. The Gunners’ upcoming fixtures and City’s game in hand mean the gap at the top remains highly volatile, and every decision — including substitutions — will face intense examination.
