  • Kylian Mbappe fed off scraps all evening and witnessed yet another Champions League collapse against Bayern Munich
  • The 24-year-old was expected to inspire PSG's purported comeback, which was foiled by a composed Bayern side
  • Despite PSG's disappointing exit, Mbappe is among the top scorers in the competition with seven goals

Kylian Mbappe has expressed disappointment following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League exit on Wednesday night.

Mbappe and his PSG teammates were hoping to overturn a first-leg 1-0 deficit but ended up suffering a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, bowing out of the competition with a three-nil deficit across two legs.

The French giants never really found a foothold in the tie and bar near misses, Bayern were in complete control and deservedly booked a spot in the last eight.

The result invariably emphasizes PSG's misery in Europe, exiting the Champions League in the last-16 stage in five of the last seven seasons, GOAL reports.

Addressing his side's European heartbreak, Mbappe expressed disappointment while swiftly channelling his attention to the French topflight.

“We are disappointed that’s how it is. We must move on and try to question everyone. We will question ourselves and return to our daily championship [Ligue 1] life,” he said as quoted by PSG Report.

PSG coach laments after UCL exit

Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier admitted the French side had no option but to accept their latest early Champions League exit and move on, although insisted the outcome of the last-16 tie against Bayern Munich would have been different had the visitors scored first in Wednesday's second leg.

"It is a big disappointment. Unfortunately, we have to digest it and accept it," Galtier told broadcaster Canal Plus after PSG lost 2-0 to Bayern in Germany to lose the tie 3-0 on aggregate.

The Ligue 1 leaders, who were looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg last month, have now gone out of the Champions League in the first knockout round in five of the last seven seasons.

Messi trolled after PSG exit

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has come under intense backlash following Paris Saint-Germain's exit from the Champions League knockout phase, Sports Brief previously reported.

The Parisians suffered back-to-back round-of-16 elimination from Europe's premier club competition after suffering a 3-0 aggregate defeat against Bayern Munich.

Having found his rhythm since the World Cup break, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was expected to inspire PSG to Champions League success just as he did with his native Argentina.
