  • Lionel Messi had to settle for no. 30 upon his arrival at Paris Saint-Germain
  • His favoured number was in the possession of ex-Barca teammate Neymar
  • Messi first got to wear PSG's no. 10 jersey in last February's Coupe de France

Lionel Messi reverted to his favourite no. 10 jersey for only the second time at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening.

The 35-year-old earlier donned his preferred shirt number for Les Parisiens, as his side stumbled to a narrow 2-1 defeat against fierce rivals, Olympique Marseille in the French Cup.

It marked only the second time Messi had worn his favourite shirt number, thanks to the weird rules governing the French Cup.

In the Coupe de France, players wear numbers 1 to 11 on their backs, rather than a squad number, which allowed the veteran to wear the no. 10 shirt.

Unfortunately for the Argentine genius, he was not lucky on his second occasion, as Marseille stunned the French champions.

Goals from Ruslan Malinovsky and Alexis Sanchez bundled PSG out, meaning the French Cup remains the only competition the Argentine genius has not won in his career after two attempts.

Why Messi will wear No.10

The Argentine genuis has had an illustrious career and has wom practically all of the tournaments he has featured in.

However, the Coupe de France remains the only competition Messi has not won in his career filled with successes.

The 35-year-old had an opportunity to win the French Cup this term, having suffered a defeat against Nice in last season's last 16.

PSG advised against Messi renewal

Sports Brief also reported on PSG and Messi negotiating a new deal table, but former player, Jerome Rothen believes the French giants should not keep the veteran on.

The Argentine's current deal with the Ligue 1 champions expires in the summer and the Parisians are looking to extend the 35-year-old’s contract as soon as possible.

However, Rothen sighted financial fair play as a reason why PSG should instead let Messi go, so as to use his huge wage bill to help improve the rest of the squad.
