  • PSG will take on Olympique Marseille in the quarter finals of the French Cup

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has had an illustrious career and won most of the tournaments he has featured in.

But the Coupe de France is the only competition the Argentine genius has not won in his career.

The 35-year-old has an opportunity to win the French Cup this term, having suffered a defeat against Nice last season in the round of 16.

There is no doubt that today’s match will present a big challenge to Lionel Messi and his team as Marseille is a strong team.

French Cup weird rules

According to PSG Report, Messi and his teammates will have to follow a weird rule to participate in the game.

The French Cup has a strict set of rules that must be implemented and followed by every team to participate in their games.

The rules indicate that the teams in the knockout stages of the French Cup must ensure their players only wear shirts with numbers from 1-11.

Messi, who wears the no.30 jersey, will need to change his kit number in order to play against the second-placed team.

PSG confirms Messi contract talks

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Luis Campos has assured fans they are working towards an agreement with Lionel Messi to extend his contract, Football Espana reports.

Campos revealed the extension with Messi is set to be activated in the coming months as talks continue to take place between the player and the club’s hierarchy.

Messi’s current deal at the Parc des Princes expires at the end of the 2022/23 season with the Parisians retaining an option to extend his contract by 12 months.

PSG advised not to renew Messi’s contract

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain are presently on the negotiating table for a contract renewal, but that idea is not being backed up by the club’s former player Jerome Rothen.

Messi’s current deal with the Ligue 1 champions expires in the summer and PSG are looking to extend the 35-year-old’s contract as soon as possible.

Rothen sighted financial fair play (FFP) as a reason and believes PSG should instead let Messi go so as to use his huge wage bill to improve the rest of the squad.
