Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi has been honoured in his native following his World Cup heroics.

The Paris Saint Germain defender has his name used for a newly built football pitch in Kasr El Kebir, Morocco.

The right-back was present at the inauguration of the pitch, sharing his appreciation for the people of his hometown.

"I had the honor of inaugurating a football field bearing my name in the city of Kasr El Kebir yesterday. I thank the authorities and residents of the city for their support and love for me. It is a great honor to return to this city, which has a special place in my heart, and to be among you, my family, and my loved ones. Thank you from the heart," he wrote on Twitter.

Hakimi starred as the Atlas Lions reached the semifinals of the World Cup, the first by an African country.

His winner in the penalty shootout against Spain, the country of his birth, set the North Africans to a sensational journey at the tournament.

Morocco have set sights on hosting the World Cup in future.

Hakimi opens up on World Cup exit

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Morocco star Achraf Hakimi has said his team gave their all after France ended their record-breaking 2022 World Cup run in the semi-final.

The Atlas Lions set several records in Qatar and will go down as one of the greatest teams in Africa.

The north Africans produced a commendable performance against the defending champions France, but they fell short.

Morocco gets heroic welcome

The Morocco national football team has been accorded a heroic welcome after jetting back home from the 2022 World Cup.

The North Africans enjoyed a successful campaign during the global football showpiece as they became the first team in history from the continent to reach the semis.

Morocco made it to the semis after facing off against some of the best teams in the world, including Belgium, Croatia, and Portugal.
