Football fans have lauded Paris Saint-Germain duo Lionel Messi and Neymar, following their behaviour on their technical bench during their clash against Auxerre.

The pair played instrumental roles as the French champions whitewashed the Ligue 1 side 5-0 on Sunday.

The South American duo were hooked off by PSG manager Christophe Galtier in the second half as a precautionary measure, ahead of the forthcoming World Cup.

A video circulating on social media shows Messi and Neymar were sitting on the bench alongside teammate Sergio Ramos, with the Brazilian appearing to signal towards the PSG manager Galtier.

It seems the former Barcelona superstars then received approval from the PSG boss to leave their place on the bench and head to the locker room.

Football fans were quick to take to Twitter to point out the behaviour of Messi and Neymar, compared with Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal icon was heavily criticised after he left Old Trafford before the full-time whistle, during his side's 2-0 win over Tottenham last month.

@_Archi_medes_ tweeted:

"With this they asked for permission. With him he did nothing of that sort. Know the serious."

@hopemanmwewa001 added:

"Them just making sure they don't cause unnecessary issues, like some people's goat. That's how you show respect to the team and the coach, and the fans that have come to watch you and the team."

@Mpho10111 posted:

"Good thing is they asked the coach otherwise this is the same thing that Ronaldo did."

@Hisham18754 tweeted:

"Messi and Neymar played in the game and weee subbed out. Ronaldo was angry coz he didn’t play. Ronaldo doesn’t have any respect for his teammates."

@040Prince added:

Because he had already received the green light before they stood up. I believe the coach needed to have a word with them. A safe flight wish i guess..

PSG continues Messi contract negotiation

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Paris Saint-Germain are hoping Lionel Messi will choose to remain in the French capital when his contract expires at the end of the current season.

Messi penned a 2-year contract with the Ligue 1 champions after ending his 17-year relationship with Barcelona in 2021, after the Catalan club could not renew his deal.

According to Eurosport, PSG is now set continue contract talks with Messi when he returns from the World Cup with Argentina.
