  • Lionel Messi is among a host of top names who will be battling for the prestigious Golden Foot Award
  • The award is the only individual gong not in Messi's cabinet, with the forward failing to clinch it on seven occasions
  • Notable names nominated for the 20th edition of the gong include Neymar, Kevin de Bruyne, Jorginho and Harry Kane
  • Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are not on the shortlist, with nominees supposed to be aged 28 years or older

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has set his sights on winning the 20th edition of the Golden Foot Award.

According to The Sun, Messi has been eligible for the award for seven years but has yet to lay his hands on it.

The publication claims there is every chance the veteran forward could win it this time after a fine run of form.

His PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe and Man City's Erling Haaland would have provided the biggest competition for Messi, but the duo has not been shortlisted as they are aged below 28 years.

Further, previous winners, who include Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, are out as they are no longer eligible to compete.

However, Messi will still be facing stiff competition for the award from a number of football stars.

Premier League stars Kevin de Bruyne, Jorginho, Harry Kane, N'Golo Kante, Heung min-Son, Thiago Silva, and Virgil van Dijk have all been nominated.

Other standout names on the shortlist include Neymar, Luis Suarez, Sergio Ramos and Manuel Neuer.

The winner of the prize will have their footprint placed on the Promenade of the Champions in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Messi's incredible ankle pass to Lionel Messi goes viral

Sports Brief had earlier reported that a video of Lionel Messi making an incredible ankle pass to Neymar during Paris Saint-Germain's clash with Nice on Saturday has dropped.

Messi has been in perfect shape for PSG this season, putting in impressive performances week in and week out.

The Argentine ace has already scored six times for PSG this season, with five of those goals coming in the French top-flight.
