According to The Mirror, Messi made fans aware of the name after his impressive performance against Honduras on Saturday, where he scored a glorious goal.

The former Barcelona superstar posted on social media after the match saying:

"As the weasel stings."

Midfielder Papu Gomez was the first to respond, adding: "The weasel is crazy."

Argentina on fine run of form ahead of the World Cup

Meanwhile, Messi's unusual nickname comes at a time Argentina are enjoying a fine run of results ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

La Albiceleste are currently on an unbeaten run which stretches all the way back to 2019.

During that period, Messi ended his international trophy drought as he helped the South American nation clinch the Copa America title and the inaugural Finalissima.

They hope to continue with the run during the World Cup, where they have been backed as favourites to cart home the global football showpiece.

Messi's Argentina backed to win the 2022 World Cup

According to Joachim Klement, Argentina will be coming up against England in the final of the global football tournament.

La Albiceleste have been pooled in Group C of the World Cup alongside Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Poland.
