  • The French Ligue 1 season kicks off this weekend, with Lyon opening the campaign with a game against Ajaccio
  • It is highly likely the league will attract many foreign fans, considering the superstars that joined French clubs this summer
  • Aaron Ramsey and Kasper Schmeichel were the latest players to join the French top tier

The French Ligue 1 kicks off in full swing on Friday, August 5, alongside the Premier League, and fans are elated.

While the Premier League is miles ahead of Ligue 1 in terms of excitement and perhaps its football, there is no denying that French top tier football is attracting more audience as seasons go by.

Paris Saint Germain is one of the reasons the French league is growing in popularity, as the French club somehow pulled the impossible in summer 2021 by signing Lionel Messi, who walked away from Barcelona, rather unwillingly, for free.

This summer, however, PSG have been relatively quiet in the transfer market, and it is other French big guns that have been making some incredible signings.

Sports Brief looks at some of the big names that will grace the Ligue 1:

Takumi Minamino

Minamino had a fairly underwhelming spell at Liverpool, and the Japan international winger joined Monaco, who paid Liverpool 15 million euros for his services.

Hugo Ekitike

Despite PSG slowing down in transfer activity, they still managed to acquire the talented Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, who will certainly be on the spotlight at PSG despite his familiarity with French football.

Aaron Ramsey

Juventus terminated Ramsey’s contract, but the former Arsenal man did not have to wait too long to find a new club.

The 31-year old has joined Nice, after spending the second half of last season at Scottish side Rangers.

Alexandre Lacazette

This is another player who is no stranger to Ligue 1.

He joined Corentin Tolisso in returning to their boyhood club Lyon, after his stint at Arsenal eventually came to an end.

Kasper Schmeichel

The Premier League winner with Leicester City eventually saw his 11-year stay with the Foxes come to an end as he also joined French club Nice.

Despite being 35, Schmeichel still has a lot to offer between the sticks.

Brazilian giants express interest in Ronaldo

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported of how Corinthians President Duilio Monteiro Alves declared his ambition of wanting to snap up Cristiano Ronaldo’s services.

Corinthians, based in Sao Paolo Brazil, is a massive club in South America and recently took up Willian from Arsenal as well as former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Renato Augusto.

"It is true that I want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. I have big dreams.” Alves said in a recent interview.
