Seven-time Ballon d'Or Lionel Messi was in incredible form as he inspired Argentina to victory over Italy at Wembley in the inaugural Finalissima.

The 34-year-old was almost unplayable as he registered two assists in a convincing 3-0 win on Wednesday night.

He set up Lautaro Martinez to open the scoring with a great run and beautiful low cross in the 28th minute.

Messi was the orchestra again late in the game after he forced the ball to Paulo Dybala in injury time to seal the victory. Angel di Maria was also on the scoresheet.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has won his 40th career trophy as Argentina beat Italy.

He has now led La Albiceleste to two international trophies in the space of eleven months, winning the Copa America and now the Finalissima.

Messi remains the world's second-most decorated player in history. He is only behind Dani Alves with 42.

What is Finalissima?

Finalissima is a new final between the European Championship winners and the Copa America winners.

European champions Italy took on South American champions Argentina in the first game branded as 'Finalissima' - although it's not the first attempt to organise such a match-up.

Argentina won the last one-off game between the champions of Europe and South America. In 1993, they defeated Denmark on penalties to lift the Artemio Franchi Cup.
