  • Lionel Messi promises Paris Saint Germain fans more successes despite a slow start to life in the French capital for the former Barcelona captain
  • Messi registered one of his lowest goal contributions in a season as he adopted a deeper role in Pochettino’s side to accommodate Neymar and Kylian Mbappe
  • The 34-year-old also expressed his happiness in winning the Ligue One title, which is his first trophy with the French giants

After an underwhelming debut season, Lionel Messi has sent a message of reassurance to Paris Saint Germain supporters. Messi has failed to replicate his impeccable form in front of goal since he joined the French champions from Barcelona at the start of the season.

Messi finished the season with a paltry six goals, which is way below the expected high standards that he has set over the years. He, however, assisted 14 times as PSG reclaimed the league title from Lille in a dominant fashion.

The Argentine forward has now promised PSG supporters that next season will be better. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner expressed his commitment on his official Instagram page.

The season is over and I wanted to thank my teammates for how they treated me since I arrived and my family for always accompanying me and supporting me.
It was a different year for everything that happened, but at the end of it all we got a league that I was very excited to achieve for what it means to be the first trophy here in Paris. We were left with the bitter taste of failing in the Champions League in a knockout that we were getting better, and at the same time, I want to take the joy of having added another title that was also one of the goals.
Surely good things are coming in 2022. It will be an important year and we will fight to be competing with ambition for everything.

PSG fell short once again in the pursuit of their maiden Champions League title after exiting in the round of 16 against Real Madrid. The future of head coach Mauricio Pochettino still hangs in the balance, with former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane a huge favourite to replace him.

Messi was also grateful to his teammates for the warm welcome he received in Paris. It had been widely expected that he would renew his contract with Barcelona. But deep financial issues forced the club to part ways with its best-ever player.

Kylian Mbappe explains why he opted to remain at Paris Saint Germain

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Kylian Mbappe had finally spoken about his decision to remain at French champions Paris Saint-Germain after being widely tipped to make a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The France international caused a lot of anger and frustration at Real Madrid as fans of the Spanish side were expecting him to sign a mega-deal for Los Blancos.

But the forward made a stunning U-turn and decided to sign a new deal at Paris Saint-Germain.
