Victor Osimhen is wasting little time reasserting his leadership at Galatasaray following his return from injury, publicly urging his squad to put recent disappointments aside and lock in ahead of one of Turkish football’s fiercest rivalries.
The Nigerian striker had been sidelined for 35 days before returning to action in Galatasaray’s 2-0 Turkish Cup quarterfinal defeat to Gençlerbirliği. Despite the loss, Osimhen was spotted pitchside consoling goalkeeper Günay Güvenç, who came under fire from a section of supporters following the result.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Intercontinental Derby, Osimhen addressed his teammates directly with a message aimed at refocusing the group. Turkish sports publication Fanatik reported on the striker’s words to the squad. “A very important match awaits us. Like everyone else, I’m eagerly anticipating it,” Osimhen said. “Now is not the time to be upset. We’re going into an important match for the championship, and we need to prepare ourselves well.”
The timing of his message carries significant weight. Galatasaray currently hold a four-point lead over second-placed Fenerbahçe and a seven-point advantage over third-placed Trabzonspor, with only four matches left in the league season. A win in Sunday’s derby would go a long way toward confirming what would be another Süper Lig title for the Istanbul club.
Osimhen’s contribution to Galatasaray’s title charge this season has been substantial. Across all competitions, the 26-year-old has recorded 19 goals and seven assists in 30 appearances — figures that underline his importance to the squad and explain why his absence over the past month was so keenly felt.
The forward joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli ahead of the 2024-25 season after a high-profile transfer saga that saw a proposed move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli collapse. His performances in Istanbul have since attracted reported interest from clubs including FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, according to reports, with his long-term future remaining a subject of speculation heading into the summer transfer window.
With the Turkish League now Galatasaray’s sole remaining objective following the cup exit, Sunday’s derby against Fenerbahçe takes on added importance. The Intercontinental Derby — contested between the two Istanbul giants — is among the most watched club fixtures in Turkish football and routinely carries title implications at this stage of the season.
For Osimhen, a fit and focused run-in over the final four matches could prove pivotal both for Galatasaray’s championship ambitions and his own prospects heading into what is expected to be a defining summer for his career.
