Victor Osimhen has weighed in on one of football’s most discussed current debates — Lamine Yamal versus Michael Olise — but declined to declare a winner, instead drawing a comparison to the enduring Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry.
The Galatasaray forward, speaking during a rapid-fire interview with Berneese, was asked to choose between the two right-wingers. Rather than naming one above the other, Osimhen opted to champion both. “That’s a tough one. Permit me to pick both,” he said. “These guys are unique in their own craft. I think they’re almost similar because they use the same foot.”
Osimhen elaborated by noting that the two players’ contrasting styles make it unreasonable to rank one ahead of the other. “The way they read the game is different, so picking one is doing a huge disservice to the other. I’ll go for both. It’s the same thing with Messi and Ronaldo. I go for both. I’ve never chosen any of them individually.”
The 2023 CAF Player of the Year rounded off his assessment with a tribute to Messi and Ronaldo’s sustained excellence. “Those two guys have been up there for almost 20 years. Some people compare, but for me, I love both, and I have to thank them for what they’ve done for football.”
The debate Osimhen addressed has gathered significant traction among football supporters. Yamal, who plays for Barcelona, has claimed back-to-back Kopa Trophy honours in 2024 and 2025, establishing himself as one of the most decorated young players in the sport’s recent history. Olise, meanwhile, has produced a standout campaign at Bayern Munich, registering over 50 goal contributions in a single season for the first time in his career. The French international has also been instrumental in Bayern’s run to the verge of a Champions League final appearance.
Osimhen himself remains one of African football’s most prominent figures. Currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, the Nigerian striker won the Serie A title with the Italian club in the 2022-23 season and claimed the CAF Player of the Year award that same year. His comments on Yamal and Olise arrive at a time when both wingers are being seriously considered in conversations around future Ballon d’Or contention.
The Yamal-Olise comparison is particularly notable given the positional and stylistic overlap between the two. Both operate predominantly from the right flank and favour their left foot, a trait Osimhen specifically highlighted. However, their broader profiles differ — Yamal is 17 years old and a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, while Olise, 23, developed through the Crystal Palace system before securing a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024.
Osimhen’s reluctance to separate the pair echoes a sentiment shared by many football analysts, who argue that framing the two as direct competitors overlooks the individual strengths each brings to their respective clubs and national teams.
