  • The win saw Jose Riveiro's side continue rising up the DStv Premiership table with the lopsided victory

Happy days are seemingly back for The Happy People.

Orlando Pirates were in searingly hot form on a boiling Sunday afternoon at Orlando Stadium in a thumping 4-1 win over the hapless Stellenbosch FC.

Thabang Monare got the ball rolling in the seventh minute after rising to meet a delicious Monnapule Saleng free-kick. Innocent Maela then doubled the score in the 22nd minute after another Saleng free-kick was not dealt with by The Maroon's defence.

Kermit Erasmus then put the result beyond doubt in the 59th minute with an unstoppable shot that left goalkeeper Sage Stephens with no chance. Stephens was again picking the ball out of his net four minutes later in the 63rd minute, diving hopelessly trying to stop a pile-driver by Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo after he was left with too much time and space to unleash his shot.

Mervin Boji added respectability to the scoreline when he headed in a powerful header from a corner kick in the 75th minute.

The victory moved Pirates to fourth place on 25 points after 17 matches. Stellenbosch remained in 15th place on 17 points having played 18 games.

Orlando Pirates XI: Chaine, Xoki, Sibisi, Shandu, Maela, Monare, Ndlondlo, Hotto, Dlamini, Saleng, Erasmus.

Stellenbosch XI: Stephens, Makhanya, Mcaba, Van Rooyen, Mthethwa, Nduli, Letsoenyo, Jabaar, Adams, Titus, Van Wyk.

Throwback: Pirates fans threaten Igesund

Gordon Igesund is one of the most storied coaches in South African football history.

Amazingly, he led Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates, Santos and Mamelodi Sundowns to league titles, the only coach to achieve this rare feat. However, he will probably remember the win with the Buccaneers in 2001 less fondly.

The campaign saw certain sections of the Bucs faithful being unhappy with the job that he was doing, particularly as the team was closing in on the Castle Lager Premiership. In April, a kombi-load of fans arrived at a training session north of Johannesburg to confront him for some reason or the other.

PSL coach arrested for assault

A criminal investigation is underway following the shocking alleged actions of a football team's coach.

The unnamed individual allegedly assaulted one of his players during an altercation. Even worse, he used a gun during the incident.

The coach was arrested in Levubu near Thohoyandou, with police charging him with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) as well as pointing a firearm at someone.
