  • Another legend from South African football's past has let his feelings known about the current state of affairs in the local game
  • Mbulelo 'Oldjohn' Mabizela has stated that it is so poor that he no longer watches the Premier Soccer League
  • This is not long after the likes of Benni McCarthy and Roger de Sa expressed their worry about dropping standards

Former Orlando Pirates, Tottenham Hotspur and Bafana Bafana defender Mbulelo Mabizela says he does not bother to watch Premier Soccer League anymore.

He became the latest in an unsettling line of South African giants who are no longer prepared to keep quiet about the falling standards of the local game.

He told IOL:

"I don't watch the PSL anymore. It is boring. Things aren't the same as when we used to play but I also don't expect them to be. If you were to compare the standard of football from when we played, it has somewhat taken steps backwards."

"The current generation couldn't take the baton and continue from where we left off and elevate the standards of the South African game in fact it has continued to regress."

He then criticised his former team Orlando Pirates, where he made his name in a sensational two-year stay between 2001 and 2003. He stated that the club was not hiring coaches properly, and suggested that players are either overwhelmed by the pressure of playing for the Soweto giants or were disrespectful of the badge.

This came just days after another club legend Steve Lekoelea sent a warning to the players who had joined the Buccaneers during the transfer window.

"Standard of our football is poor": Roger De Sa agrees with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos

Roger de Sa agreed with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos' sentiments that South African football is not up to standard and is continuously sinking.

As reported by Sports Brief, the former Orlando Pirates coach and Egypt assistant coach implied that not enough people connected to local football were prepared to admit this, which did not help the national side. In June, Broos launched a scathing attack on the standard of the Premier Soccer League.

This was met with outrage and agreement, and was the latest statement by a respected figure in the country concerned about its football.
