FootballDStv Premiership Match Review: Orlando Pirates and Chippa United Play Out Goalless Draw
- Orlando Pirates and Chippa United played to a goalless draw in the DStv Premiership at the Orlando Stadium
- The result compromised the Buccaneers' chances of finishing as runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns
- More importantly, it means that Pirates' dreams of playing in the CAF Champions League next season are fading
Orlando Pirates and Chippa United played out a rather entertaining 0-0 draw at the Orlando Stadium in the DStv Premiership.
The Buccaneers dominated the visitors from the beginning, but poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping by Lloyd Kazupua, assisted by brave defending, prevented what would have been a landslide of goals. The result saw United also break a 12-match losing streak to Pirates.
The result saw the home side move up to fourth on the log with 40 points, five behind second-place Royal AM on 45 points. Even if Pirates was to win the CAF Confederations Cup, the only way to qualify for the Champions League next season is to finish in second, so this result is rather costly.
Chippa, on the other hand, continued moving away from the relegation zone. They remained in 12th position having now amassed 26 points, three above the 15th spot, which would drag the club into the unpleasant relegation/promotion play-off mini-tournament.
Remarkably, this was also Pirates' 13th draw of the season, two less than Amazulu with 15.
Confirmed line-ups:
Pirates: Ofori, Nyauza, Ndah, Shandu, Maela, Mabaso, Makaringe, Hotto, Lorch, Dzvukamanja, Peprah
Subs: Mpontshane, Mntambo, Mosele, Dlamini, Mabasa, Ndlovu, Mhango, Motshwari, Jele
Chippa: Kazapua, Hanamub, Mkhize, September, Mthethwa, Zulu, Makobela, Seabi, Mbenyane, Pfumbidzai, Eva Nga.
Subs: Watenga, Maloisane, Mdunyelwa, Matrose, Sekotlong, Dinge, Sangare, Lebitso, Luthuli.
Obscure regulation means that CAF Confederations Cup winner can't play in Champions League
The winner of the CAF Confederations Cup is in for a shock.
As reported on Sports Brief, according to the continent's football governing body, they won't be playing in the Champions League next season but for a technicality in the rule book.

FootballThe rules state that in order to qualify for the Champions League, a team has to secure a league position of first or second in the top 12 ranked leagues in Africa, and finish first outside these leagues to complete the set.
