Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids expressed his disappointment with the paramedics' response to an unconscious Paseka Mako.
Mako was knocked out cold after colliding with teammate Richard Ofori at the end of the match against Baroka FC in a DStv Premiership encounter in Polokwane. The match ended 0-0 after the referee, in agreement with Pirates captain Happy Jele, blew the whistle with 10 minutes left in recognition of the shocked state of the visiting players.
What was apparent to spectators at the venue and viewers at home was how paramedics dithered and dawdled when they were being beckoned on frantically by the referee, Pirates medical staff and players while Mako lay stricken. It took over three minutes between the time Mako was struck and when the ambulance got onto the field where he lay.
Players from both teams then shielded Mako in a circle while the visitors' medical team struggled to resuscitate Mako, with the coaching staff trying to calm a disconsolate Ofori on the sideline.
According to TimesLIVE, Davids said to journalists when asked about this said:
"The less said about that the better. But, nobody in the ambulance, you don't know where the drivers are. Are they watching the game? They have to be on call, they have to be ready. It's an emergency.
Credit to our medical team. Not even 10 seconds and they were on the field seeing to Mako. But, the reaction from the medical team, the ambulance not good enough. Definitely not a PSL standard.”
