Cristiano Ronaldo will not be joining the French club Olympique Marseille this summer. This is according to the club's President, Pablo Longoria, who denied reports linking the Manchester United star with a shock move to France.

It is in the public domain that Ronaldo has been looking for a way out of Old Trafford and Marseille had been touted as one of the possible destinations.

The forward is interested in participating in the Champions League, a possibility that Manchester United does not offer this season.

90 Min reports that Longoria has branded rumours of Ronaldo joining Marseille as fake news.

It’s the social media world full of fake news. We want reality. The Ronaldo deal is not for us.

If Ronaldo were to join Marseille, it could rekindle his intense rivalry with Lionel Messi, who plays for Marseille's bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain. But with the deal now off, the only other feasible option for the Portuguese star is to rejoin his boyhood club, Sporting Lisbon.

Marseille and Sporting Lisbon were drawn in the same group in the Champions League draw conducted on Thursday. Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt and English side Tottenham Hotspur are the other two teams in that Group.

Marseille were believed to be conducting a study on the viability of signing Ronaldo

Sports Brief had earlier reported that French giants Marseille were reportedly conducting a study to determine the viability of signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is understood to be keen to depart Old Trafford despite having a year left on his current deal with Manchester United.

According to reports, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is desperate to play in the Champions League this season. Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Napoli, and Sporting Lisbon are among the clubs the 37-year-old has been linked with.
